[HWPL] 30th Anniversary of World Press Freedom Day
On the 30th Anniversary of World Press Freedom Day, HWPL, in collaboration with the Permanent Delegation of Suriname to UNESCO and the National Commission of the Democratic Republic of Congo for UNESCO, organized a webinar to highlight the need for press freedom in today's society. 158 people from over 30 countries gathered online to commemorate this important day.
H.E. Mr. Yaya Sangaré, former Minister of Communication of Mali and former member of the National Assembly
"Healthy, independent journalism is vital to any democratic society. It comes from the right to hold an opinion, to express it, to disseminate it and to share it freely, as well as the right to seek information and ideas."
Mr. Lazare Liema Ibongo-botie, Permanent Secretary of the National Commission of the Democratic Republic of Congo for UNESCO
"UNESCO is raising awareness among Member States to strengthen standards and policies that promote freedom of expression, press freedom, safety of journalists and the right to information. May 3 reminds governments of the need to respect their commitments to press freedom."
Moustapha DIAWARA, Director of Publication of the newspaper "Le Sursaut
"As for the private sector, it has the duty to establish viable partnerships with communication and information structures on a sound basis. Finally, governments must first ensure the safety and information rights of journalists. Then, they must annex to the national budget an annual public aid to the press with well defined criteria.
Severina Pais, Head of the Public Relations Department of HWPL in the Czech Republic
"The media has the power to influence public opinion and political decisions, and its reporting can help shape the course of important issues, including peacebuilding and conflict resolution."

This is a beautiful post. I'm so grateful that organisations like IPYG and HWPL actually exist in this Godforsaken world.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that one of the five member states of the UN Security Council has launched an invasion of a neighbouring country without repercussions proves that international law and its implementation is weak and in need of reform. The DPCW, which HWPL and IPYG are promulgating, is the only hope for the cessation of all global hostilities. Any member state head who refuses to place their signature in support of the DPCW only exposes their desire for war to their own people.
May peace prevail!
